New Subsidy Scheme for Public Transport in Argentina

The national government has established a new scheme for the distribution of subsidies for public road passenger transport that benefits companies using clean technologies. The measure aims to incentivize the transition towards sustainable mobility by recognizing the specific operational costs of unconventional units. The previous compensation system did not discriminate between different types of motorization, which made it difficult to promote less polluting options. With this modification, operators using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or electric energy will access an economic differential aimed at stimulating investment in the sustainability of the transport system. The measure was officialized through Resolution 6/2026 of the Secretariat of Transport, published this Thursday in the Official Gazette, which was processed by the Argentine News Agency. The document approves the new procedures for calculating the distribution of tariff compensations and the methodology for constructing theoretical reference tariffs. The regulation instructs the updating of the cost structure to incorporate the yields and consumption of units powered by alternative energies alongside those of diesel. To determine these values, the national authority took as a transitional basis the price and yield parameters previously established by the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. This new settlement scheme applies to urban and suburban transport lines of national jurisdiction in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Region. As stipulated by the Secretariat of Transport, the new calculation criteria will be applied retroactively for settlements corresponding to the period of November 2025 and subsequent months.
